DopeVST Soul Town

dopevst soul town

The guys over at DopeVST bring yet another plugin to the table.  This time around it’s called DopeVST Soul Town.  This is a keyboard plugin designed for anyone looking to create with that soulful or motown sound in mind.  In the past, DopeVST has been mainly known for creating tools suitable for hiphop.  However, I believe this plugin can be used for hiphop and R&B or even NeoSoul.  To those of you who love the recordings from the likes of Motown Records or Stax Records, this may be for you.

Features

  • 20 Vintage instruments including Rhodes, B3, Clavinet, Strings, Horns, Bass and more.
  • 100 MIDI files included designed for all 20 instruments inc chord progression, solos and baselines for easy beat constructing
  • Up to five velocity layers for greater dynamics and playing feel
  • Built in flexible pitch, pan, glide and gain controls
  • Includes a built in analogue style reverb
  • Includes Poly, Mono and Legato modes
  • 12 Segment output level meter
  • Full ADSR & LFO controls
  • Ultra low CPU usage [perfect if you own a  laptop / tablet / low spec PC/MAC]
  • Ultra fast patch loading [flick through patches in lightening quick times]
  • Program your MIDI patterns manually or use a MIDI/USB controller/keyboard/MPD

Pros

  1. Very dope interface and pleasing to the eye
  2. Extremely easy to navigate through
  3. Parameter controls are very responsive as oppose to glitchy
  4. Easy plug and play with those midi files

Cons

  1. One of the bass sounds may not load up right unless that’s an error on my part
  2. The clavinet sound does not measure up to the other vintage keyboards such as the rhodes and wurlitzer
  3. The xylophone also sounds more like a toy
  4. Will not work with Protools
  5. At $95 a little pricey for my taste judging by the sounds

Overall, would I use this, i’d say yes for the wurly sound, strings and the midi files.   Check Pluginboutique.com for more info or if interested in purchasing. Here’s a vid if you need a demonstration where I go through ALL the sounds.
